The Wife of Ikemba Nnobi, Dr Thelma Ezeonu has advocated improved access to quality education for the girl-child.

The United Nations in 2011 declared that October 11 annually be marked as the UN International Day for the Girl Child to highlight and address issues affecting the progress and wellbeing of the girl child in a male-dominated world.

Speaking to newsmen to mark the 2024 International Day for the Girl-Child on Friday, Dr Thelma expressed worry over the growing number of female children that are out of school and called for immediate interventions to change the trend nation wide. 


Dr Thelma noted that over a time girl's are largely exploited as support and back-up; only to be seen and not heard.


She said: “Education helps the girl child to avoid early marriage. When you attend tertiary school, you delay marriage. Child  marriage breeds a circle of poverty which negatively affects society.


“According to Dr Thelma, the need for girl child education can't be overemphasized. When a girl eventually gets married after tertiary education, she will have a lot more maturity than when she was a child bride. Education  broadens her horizon to be a better wife, better mother and better stakeholder in the society. Education further helps the equipped mother in raising the next generation"


The Wife of Ikemba Nnobi pointed out that the significance of the girl-child in the development of any society can never be under-estimated.


She added that education of the girls would exposed them to learn communication skills, their right as females, good hygiene among other things.


She, however, advised upcoming  girls to choose their role models amongst successful women, so that they can be motivated to aim higher.


Dr Thelma equally remarked that if government at all levels succeed in educating the girl-child in the country, then we have educated virtually the entire country.


The theme for this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, on 11 October is Girl's Vision for the Future" the theme is to listen to girls and invest in proven solutions accelerating progress towards a future in which every girl fulfils their potential.
